When should I bring my child to a pediatric dentist?

As parents, we take care of our little ones in every way we possibly can.  We buy them the best multi vitamins they need, and we take them to see the Pediatricians when they are not well.  So it only makes sense that we take them to a Pediatric Dentist to help care for their teeth.   Many parents now a days will start to bring their children in before they develop “cavities”.  The best time to see your Pediatric Dentist is before any cavities form.  Prevention is the best medicine.  As recommended by the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the best time for this to happen is when the child is 1 yrs old or 6 months after the first tooth erupts.  These well care visits will involve a gentle examination, and a light cleaning.  The dentist will evaluate the surrounding structures for abnormalities and talk about anticipatory guidance of what to expect as more teeth erupt.  This is the time when the dentist will also help the parent with any concerns about cleaning or past trauma incidences.  Early detection of any issues can save you money, time and pain in the long run.
