The First Visit
Dr. Tsai strongly believes success in dental care is a team effort involving the parents input about your child’s treatment options. Parents are invited to follow their child and observe all appointments. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends initial visits for children 6 months after the first tooth erupts and no later than age 1.
Why Choose Us?
Your child will have continual and consistent care from one practitioner. We believe this will make for a trusting relationship with your child as they grow to accept dentistry. Dr. Tsai personally reviews your child’s records prior to their visits and will determine necessary radiographs so to limit any unnecessary exposure to radiations. We welcome parents to stay with their child through their dental visits, Dr. Tsai realizes that we are treating the family, not just the child.
Here at CarlsbaDDS Pediatric Smiles, we proudly serve the children and families of Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Encinitas and San Diego. Dr. Tsai accepts all PPO dental insurance plans, however, she is a provider for a handful of them. Please contact the office for more information. If you have dental insurance, we will be happy to help you receive the maximum benefits available under your policy.
Preparing for the First Dental Visit
Schedule an appointment time when your child is alert and well rested. Children 5 yrs and younger tend to be more cooperative earlier in the day. Explain to your child before the visit that the dentist will count his/her teeth and make sure they are strong and healthy. You can role play dentist at home. Reading a story about a character that has a positive experience with the dentist, Dora and the Berenstein Bears series are good starters.
- Limit frequency of meals and snacks.
- Encourage brushing, flossing, and rinsing.
- Watch what you drink.
- Avoid sticky foods.
- Make treats part of meals.
- Choose nutritious snacks.
How will You handle my child? He/She will not cooperate at this age.
At age 1, we generally only do an initial examination and light cleaning/wiping of the erupted teeth, which lasts about 2-3 minutes with absolutely no discomfort to your child. It is normal that your child may cry for the visit . For added comfort, they may either sit on your lap or lay in the chair with you.
