What is SDF?
Silver Diamine Fluoride, SDF, is a cavity fighting liquid. It is an alternative treatment for some tooth decay lesions, and especially in younger children. Another usage, is in the adolescents, where our goal is to “freeze†the lesions until the decayed tooth is ready to exfoliate. SDF is a non-invasive procedure. In most cases, the child accepts the process without the need for moderate sedations. The side effect of SDF is the black discoloration of the decayed area. Healthy tooth structures will remain white. Another point to consider is that it is not a cure for cavities. Due to the topical application of the medicine, we need to apply it multiple times for it to be effective.
